Students and writers wonder why People should ever try Composing poetry Instead of a novel, essay, or story When poets often get no glory Looking for rhythm, meter, and especially rhyme Gives a writer the time She or he needs to unwind, Exercise, and retrain the mind To think in new, exciting ways Before it otherwise decays Because of diseases so many people fear After seeing those disorders come too near, Making loved ones from their lives disappear. So, learn to lend your heart an ear Giving love a chance to grow And words help you to show The universe’s beauty For many More eyes to see Integrate melody with its harmony.

Once a subject fits you naturally,
To begin treating it poetically, Look through a thesaurus and dictionary So you can describe you selection meaningfully Giving others a chance to relate With the terms of your love or hate. Then, using paper and pen Or computer screen, let words blend, Moving them around Until you like their rhythm and sound. Sometimes, Words also fall into natural rhymes And poetic structures so formal Only traditionalists find them normal, While other emotions Only want to flow as freely as the oceans, Each telling a story So beautifully That for its author it is meant to be Part of the great literary unity. “I like poetry
But in all honesty Know not how to start…” You say, but I Reply, “Begin With what’s in Your heart.” As in other forms of art Visual, performing, and of the written part, Chronicle your life and cares To find the most connections and shares For what you do and make So each participant finds something to take Into another life or family Expanding the experience of humanity So look inside yourself and take a start In poetry with what’s on your heart Whether you see visual art, a school play, Dance in the form of jazz, tap, or ballet Great literature, performance by chorus, orchestra, or band Or maybe you describe colors of your land, Loves, hates, religion and philosophy, Food, math, science and language join forces in poetry. Take a turn from 2 months of history To the opportunity Given by a month to appreciate poetry Taking some time To explore rhythm and rhyme Learning to appreciate A creative way to communicate Our thoughts and feelings in ways short and long With the possibility of composed music making it into a song When verse, stanza, and strain All come to those who let consciousness rain Down from the mind to the hand Onto paper or screen in a master plan To share what once swirled around But decided not to be held bound So it emerged to share a fear, hope, or dream In the path to cleanse the mind or build a team By uniting thought to word in a dance Helping many to woo or romance A partner or maybe a story In the longstanding tale of humanity’s glory. |
